Mata lived with Rupert and rented out her own house in Avatiu, but she and Kali seemed to live between both the houses; on Mondays, when Aiden and Tris were with her, they fed the pigs in Avatiu and went to Tupapa later in the afternoon. The boys hated Rupert, who seemed to have no kindness in him, and were always glad when he wasn’t around. He seemed a strange choice of boyfriend for Mata, with her warm and generous heart. Maybe she felt sorry for him. Maybe no other woman on the island would have anything to do with him and she hated to see anyone alone. That’s the only explanation I can come up with. But lord knows, the human heart is a perverse and tricky organ.

Friday, December 27

It is a lovely day — warm and windy. The ocean is rough (there’s a storm up north) and the surf sounds very loud but the sun is out. I taught Aiden to play chess last week and he has taken to it — he’s setting up the board so we can play a game before dinner. We sit at the table in Emily’s workroom, with its very tall ceilings and its very tall French doors, palm trees just outside and the light pearly and soft. All the doors are open and sometimes a butterfly gets blown in. The moko watch us from upside down on the ceiling.
